What if the key to a closer relationship with God has been in front of you all along—right out in the open? The Bible is more than a sacred book; it is God's own expression, His living Word revealed to us. From creation to Christ to written Scripture, God the Word has appeared in various guises so that we might truly know Him. Once you grasp this principle, your study time in the Word will never be the same!

The Problem: Understanding "The Word of God"

  • What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "the Word of God"?
  • We might think of the words that God speaks. Is that the Word of God? Yes!
  • We might think of the Bible. Is the Bible the Word of God? Absolutely!
  • We might recall sermons from a pastor or prophetic words spoken by a true servant of God. Are those the Word of God? Yes, when they come from Him!
  • And what about Jesus? Is He the Word of God? Without question!

This is perhaps confusing, but in this brief teaching, we are going to clarify what the Word of God truly is and how Jesus, the Bible, God's voice directly to us, and His Word through servants are connected.

What Is the Word of God Really?

One of the greatest things about John 1:1 is the revelation it presents:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1, KJV)

John asserts three strong statements:

  • In the beginning was the Word." – The Word was before creation.
  • And the Word was with God." – The Word is separate from the Father.
  • And the Word was God." – The Word is completely divine.

John discloses that the Word is not mere spoken words but a divine Person—God Himself. But how can this be?

The Self-Expression of God

Prior to existence, where was God? Isaiah 57:15 tells us:

"For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity." (Isaiah 57:15, KJV)

Prior to creating heaven and earth, God was in eternity. The Bible teaches us that God is the Father, the Word, and the Spirit. John 1:1 tells us that God the Word was with God the Father, and that the Word was God.

To fulfill the Word of God, we must look at it from two perspectives:

  • Absolute – God as He is
Before creating anything, there was eternally God the Father, the Word, and the Spirit in one.

  • Relational – God revealed to creation

The Word of God in the Bible is about God's relation to us. God the Word is His word about Himself—the One by and through whom He makes Himself known.

When God wants to reveal His mind, He sends His Word. When God wants to work powerfully, He sends His Word.

"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please." (Isaiah 55:11, KJV)

The Expressions of God's Word

God's Word is His voice. As it is expressed in different ways, we see different forms of the same Word.

1God in Eternity and Heaven

Before creation, God was in eternity. When He created heaven, He appeared among the angels.

2. Formation of the Earth

God's first expression in the physical world was His voice:

"God said, Let there be light: and there was light." (Genesis 1:3, KJV)

When God speaks, His Word goes out to accomplish His purpose (Isaiah 55:11).

3. Interaction with the First People

God spoke in Isaiah's and Ezekiel's day as a verbal voice to the First People. The same Word that created the world now came in a vocal voice.

4. The Prophets

God began speaking by means of prophets. Though men penned the Bible, Paul explains it is surely the Word of God:

"For this cause also give we thanks to God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God." (1 Thessalonians 2:13, KJV)

5. The Climactic Self-Expression of God – Jesus Christ

The same Word who created the universe and spoke to us through the prophets became flesh—Jesus!

"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets." (Hebrews 1:1, KJV)

Jesus, the Word, was forever God. When He assumed flesh, He didn't forsake His divinity—He incorporated humanity into Himself!

6. The Word in the Flesh Spoke Words

When Jesus was on earth, He taught people. Whether we're talking about Jesus as a person or about His words when He was speaking, it is the same eternal Word being revealed in different ways.

7. The Bible—God's Word in Writing

God has preserved His Word in written form. The Bible contains God's words, like those which Jesus uttered.

The Bible: More Than a Book

What you have in your hands right now is the Word of God.

The same Word that was before creation, spoke to Adam, was declared by the prophets, and became flesh—is now preserved in Scripture.

Your Bible may be dusty and old or electronic, but its words are the Word of God—and the Word of God is God Himself.

Every time you read, hear, or think about the Word, recall that you are having a personal encounter with God. Make this a reality and make your study a powerful, life-changing experience!
