In this chapter, we explore how God takes the initiative to open our spiritual eyes. In the next, we will discuss what we can actively do to foster His intervention.

Three Key Truths About Spiritual Sight

Before delving into specific ways God opens our eyes, let’s consider three foundational truths:

1.      Seeing Leads to Knowing
Whether through prophetic visions or understanding Scripture, the ultimate goal of spiritual sight is to know—to perceive, comprehend, and intimately understand God’s truth.

2.      God’s Central Focus Is Jesus
Above all, God desires that we see Him revealed through Jesus. While He may show us angels, spiritual beings, or even demonic forces, His primary intent is to direct our gaze to Jesus. Seeing Christ transforms lives; no one encounters Him and remains the same.

3.      God Opens Eyes, But We Can Prepare
Only God can open our spiritual eyes, yet we can position ourselves to receive His intervention. Preparation is an act of faith and alignment with His will.

How God Opens Our Spiritual Eyes

1. Through the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the divine enabler who opens our eyes to perceive spiritual truths. In the Old Testament, prophets were empowered by the Spirit to see visions. Joel 2:28 prophesies a time when the Spirit will be poured out, enabling all believers to see visions and dream dreams.

  • The Indwelling of the Spirit: When the Holy Spirit resides within us, He reveals God and the supernatural realm. Every believer has this potential, as Joel’s prophecy indicates.
  • Spiritual Gifts: The Spirit bestows gifts such as prophecy, wisdom, and understanding. These gifts allow us to see visions, have dreams, and discern deeper truths in God’s Word.

2. Through His Word

God’s Word is a powerful tool for opening spiritual eyes. It acts as a mirror, reflecting divine truths and unveiling the realities of the spiritual realm.

  • The Word Brings Light: As the Psalmist declares, “The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130, ESV). God’s Word illuminates our understanding, helping us perceive His truths.
  • The Word and the Spirit Work Together: The Word alone doesn’t suffice; it requires the Spirit to bring it to life. Together, they reveal God’s nature, spiritual realities, and the hidden things of the supernatural.
